GLAM SLAM

It's yet another cozy Sunday afternoon during quarantine, and Serena Williams is lounging in her newly decorated home office on Zoom with her big sister Venus. It’s just two months after the tennis titans went toe to toe at the Top Seed Open in Kentucky, which was their first time back on the court since the forced hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The world-famous pair, who have played many roles in each other’s lives in the 23 years since their first match against each other—best friends, former teammates, competitors, and longtime roommates—are giggling as they reflect on the five-year journey of collaborating on their greatest joint effort yet: designing Serena’s dream home. After co-owning a Palm Beach Gardens property where the Grand Slam duo lived together on and off since…

2 Why China’s domestic rebound will predict the next era of hotel design

2 Why China’s domestic rebound will predict the next era of hotel design

As the greatest engine of political, social and economic development the world has ever seen, China holds a certain amount of weight when it comes to setting agendas. There are few sectors in which this has been more visible than hotels, wherein unprecedented market growth in the early 2000s and expansion through the 2010s was tied to a fundamental shift in the way hospitality design at large was considered. As Kohn Pedersen Fox principal Forth Bagley told me in an interview last year following the launch of Rosewood Hong Kong: ‘The work we did with The Mandarin Oriental at the start of the millennium was an attempt not just to separate hotel from house, but to elevate the hotel into an experience you could never imagine having at home.’ The proliferation…

The Wild at Scotland’s Heart

The Wild at Scotland’s Heart

AT THE END OF THE LAST ICE AGE Scotland was a truly wild place, where the Highland tiger, a distinctly banded wildcat, as well as wolves, lynx, and bears, roamed among Caledonian pine forests. The Romans called the country’s north the Great Wood of Caledon. But over time, humans purged the Highlands for timber, charcoal, and agriculture. Native species such as wild boar, polecat, and elk vanished. Today only 4 percent of Scotland’s land area is covered by forest. Now an alliance of environmental groups and government agencies is pooling resources on a larger scale than ever before in an effort to rebuild Scottish ecosystems to their natural states. Some of the coalition’s goals include committing a third of public land to nature restoration by 2030, expanding tree-planting projects, and reintroducing keystone…

PAYING TRIBUTE TO HER LATE HUSBAND THE QUEEN A SHIP-SHAPE OUTING AS SHE RETURNS TO SOLO DUTIES

‘It was an honour to see her, let alone speak to her. The highlight of my career’ Resplendent in a military-style, brick-red cashmere coat, the Queen cut an elegant figure making her first solo engagement since the death of the Duke of Edinburgh. But as she arrived at Portsmouth Naval Base to visit the flagship she named in 2014, the monarch was paying a tender tribute to her husband by teaming her outfit with the striking ruby, diamond and gold Scarab brooch he gave her in 1966. Smiling brightly, Her Majesty stepped on board HMS Queen Elizabeth as the crew prepared for the huge aircraft carrier’s maiden operational voyage – a seven-month deployment to the Far East. She was greeted by Captain Angus Essenhigh and Commodore Steve Moorhouse, commander of the UK Carrier Strike…

WHAT BIDEN’S NEW $100B PLAN FOR BROADBAND MEANS

WHAT BIDEN’S NEW $100B PLAN FOR BROADBAND MEANS

The problems with U.S. broadband networks have been obvious for years. Service costs more than in many other rich nations, it still doesn’t reach tens of millions of Americans and the companies that provide it don’t face much competition. Now the Biden administration is promising to do something about all of those issues as part of its proposed $2.3 trillion infrastructure package. The plan, which would devote $100 billion to get all Americans connected, is more idea than policy and lacks a lot of important detail. But it sketches out a striking new vision of activist government measures intended to improve high-speed internet service, following decades in which the government has largely left the job to private companies. WHAT IS BIDEN’S PROPOSAL? It would spend $100 billion to “future-proof” broadband as part of an…

AFTER ‘ROCKET LAKE,’ 5 THINGS INTEL MUST DO ON DESKTOP TO GET ITS CPU MAGIC BACK Intel must replicate what Apple has done. The Apple M1 is the first ARM-based system on a chip designed by Apple Inc. as a central processing unit for its line of Macintosh computers. It was inspired by their ARM A14 chip. It is deployed in the MacBook Air, Mac mini, and the MacBook Pro. It is the first personal computer chip built using a 5nm process. Apple claims that it has the world’s fastest CPU core.—Richard Keyes It is past time for Intel to move its chip design to at least 10nm, achieving all of its economies in circuit density and power consumption, especially when TSMC and Samsung are already at 7nm. CHEESE’S DIRTY SECRET

MANY of us have, at one time or another, at least thought about giving up meat and fish and going vegetarian. If you are one of those people, there is another villain on your plate that you may not have considered. Hard, soft, runny, blue, smelly – cheese. The cheese industry is a gigantic success story. World production is at least 22 million tonnes a year, up from 15 million tonnes in 2000, and is projected to keep on expanding as people in traditionally cheeseless cultures in parts of Asia catch on. Of course, you don’t have to be a vegetarian to love the stuff. But there is some evidence that, in some Western countries, a meat-cheese switch is happening. In the UK at least, studies show that people who don’t…

1 COTTON SHIRT What differentiates this particular white shirt by British brand Erdem from others of its ilk, is in the unique borderie anglaise that trims the hem. It’s a detail that harkens to the revival of old-timey craftsmanship led by American brand Bode but done in a rather British manner. Treat this as a summer staple which would go with anything from your favourite berms to your washed-out denim jeans. Erdem from Mr Porter 2 RUBBER ROMAN STUD TURTLE SLIDES We’re hitting that period where slides are sliding back (pun intended) into our consciousness once again. | CELEBRATE | Ready to Launch No need to wait for twilight’s last gleaming. Kids will have a blast setting off these DIY confetti poppers whenever you hand them out. Making them is definitely not rocket science. You’ll just need a cardboard box and tubes you’d otherwise recycle—from gift wrap, toilet paper, or paper towels—plus some white paint, blue painters’ tape (for the patriotic stripes), barbecue skewers, red construction paper, and kitchen twine (for the faux fuses). The only thing you might not have on hand is the confetti; these oversize dots and stars are easy to find online and made of biodegradable paper. To let ’em rip, all little ones have to do is hold the rocket in one hand, push the handle up with the other, and … ka-boom! For…

MISSION INTO THE SUN

MISSION INTO THE SUN

“TRAVELLING AT A BLISTERING 720,000KM/H, THE SPACECRAFT WILL REPEATEDLY DIVE CLOSER TO THE SUN” THIS summer, NASA will launch one of its most ambitious space missions to date: the Parker Solar Probe. Travelling at a blistering 720,000km/h (450,000mph), the spacecraft will repeatedly dive closer to the Sun than any previous spacecraft in history. It will venture so close that the Parker Solar Probe team refers to it as touching the Sun. In fact, it will dive in and out of the Sun’s atmosphere, known as its corona. And it’s not going to be alone up there. In February 2019, the European Space Agency (ESA) will launch a solar mission of its own, called Solar Orbiter. This craft will not go as close to the Sun as its NASA counterpart but it will…

Cherries

Cherries

The cherry tree is native to Asia and Europe and many species now grow across the Northern hemisphere, including wild cherries. For culinary purposes, there are two main species – sweet and sour. The sweet ones are best fresh while sour cherries are usually used in cooking as they’re simply too sour to be enjoyed on their own. What’s in a cup? One cup of fresh, whole sweet cherries offers natural fruit sugar as well as over three grams of fibre, two grams of protein, small amounts of B vitamins, beta-carotene (vitamin A), vitamin K, 18 per cent of your vitamin C requirement and small amounts of important minerals such as iron, calcium, copper, magnesium and potassium. Sour cherries are similar, the only differences being less sugar, more beta-carotene, malic acid and…

Is Shamita Shetty ‘Queening’ it up in Bigg Boss 15?

It must be love… ’cos there’s no logical reason why Colors TV continues to treat Shamita Shetty like she is the incarnate of the great queen Cleopatra herself. Look at the facts itself… Shamita Shetty debuted in 2000 in Yash Raj Films Mohabbatein… before that she was apprenticing under designer Manish Malhotra as a fashion intern. Supposedly, Manish saw a spark in her and egged her on to be an actor. Mohabbatein was a great launch pad and Shamita even won the Best debut award and even the Star Of The Year female (Stardust) in 2006. After that she dabbled in a few films and became a bit of a sensation for her song ‘Sharara Sharara’. Fine… everything worked alright for her until the film offers started drying up. Perhaps…

LUXURY TRAVEL TRENDS

Luxury travel has come of age as people seek out novel experiences and unique destinations. So says Virtuoso CEO Matthew Upchurch, recently in Australia to release the results of the first ever in-depth survey into the travel trends and preferences of high-net-worth individuals, a collaboration between Virtuoso and Hamilton Island resort, qualia. A new definition of luxury The 2015 Australian Luxury Travel Survey reveals that travellers are redefining luxury – modern jet-setters are welleducated entrepreneur types who place a high value on experiencing the world. “In many cases, some of the luxury players may not be super wealthy – they might be a tenured professor or an executive of a company, but they’re spending a disproportionate amount of their disposable income on travel,” Upchurch explains. “In the last 15 years there’s been a…

Black in Academia

IN MAY, the killing of George Floyd brought a harsh reality to the forefront of conversations worldwide: Racism permeates every aspect of society. And science, as part of society and my own profession, is not immune. Social media movements in 2020 such as #BlackInTheIvory and #BlackBirdersWeek urged the scientific community to take a hard look at the racism that lies within its walls, as revealed by its own community members. Thousands of Black scientists took to Twitter, Facebook and beyond to share personal stories of prejudice, stereotyping and discrimination faced throughout their careers. These experiences have had devastating consequences for their mental health, professional success and, ultimately, willingness to stay in their fields. Racism in science is nothing new. For centuries, science has been a foremost tool used to build, defend…

Skyggefulde pasteller i Sydney

Spice of Life

ON A TRIP to the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh in February 2017, Sana Javeri Kadri, right out of college and working in marketing at Bi-Rite, San Francisco’s beloved specialty-grocery chain, was introduced to a turmeric so flavorful and nuanced, it changed the direction of her life. That might sound dramatic, but given the dusty old spices she was familiar with, this golden, glowing powder, packed with zesty, floral notes, was nothing short of a revelation. The man behind the bounty was a third-generation farmer, Prabhu Kasaraneni, who had planted heirloom turmeric using ancient, self-taught farming methods among fields of marigolds, bananas, and black rice. Within days, Javeri Kadri decided to put an income-tax return toward purchasing roughly seven hundred pounds of turmeric from him, promising to return to India…

What is the quintessential Patek Philippe watch? Some will say the answer is simple; it is the Nautilus. Because of how globally sought-after it is, how fascinating its origin story is, and how it is in some ways (for better or for worse), even bigger than Patek Philippe itself. Others will say, beyond a shadow of a doubt, it has got to be a minute repeater. Because Patek Philippe minute repeaters are so rare, so worshipped and so exclusive, that only selected customers of the Manufacture are allowed to acquire one. These are also known as application watches because in order to get one, you'd have to apply for it through a Patek Philippe distributor and hope your credentials as a watch collector convince the Manufacture that you do deserve to…

Cultivating a reading life

I learned to read perched on my grandmother’s knee. She was chair-bound, I was about four years old. I remember the shimmering scales on the book The Rainbow Fish and my nanna’s finger skating beneath each word as she read out loud. As a child, reading was at once a solitary journey — my first independent adventure — and an exercise in connection; a shared joy. This paradox remains just as true and thrilling today. This is not to say that my relationship with reading is an uncomplicated one. Very often, reading is not easy. It can be difficult to summon the concentration. I’m sucked into the vortex of my phone. Or I dip fretfully in and out of five books before landing, grateful, on something that feels right. My friends…

If it’s summer and I’m within a 30-minute drive of Outlet Beach, a little slip of sand and pines on Maine’s Sabbathday Lake, I’m making the detour. Not for the swimming, though it’s pleasant enough, but for the ice cream. In 2013, chef Krista Kern Desjarlais was at the height of her career. The awards for her Portland, Maine, restaurant, Bresca, were piling up, and there were requests to appear on television, entreaties to open more restaurants, and a packed reservation book. But for the veteran chef, there was something more important: her then-2-year-old daughter, Cortland, who was no longer content to hang out in the restaurant kitchen while her mom cooked. “I had worked my whole life to have those opportunities, but none of them were worth spending less time…

Lauren HUTTON On GOING YOUR OWN WAY

I grew up in Charleston and Miami and Tampa. My idea of beauty was a giant orange and yellow grass-hopper with pastel wings that I saw when I was a little girl. I chased my cousin Artie around with it! When I moved to New York and became a model, I didn’t know anything about the industry. I got a job modeling for Christian Dior for $50 a week. Once I started working, I made myself an athlete. I uncrossed my eyes. (Dick Avedon used to look up at me from behind his camera and ask, “Are they straight yet?”) I jumped around. I worked hard. But by 1972, there weren’t many of us models left. All the big girls like Veruschka, Twiggy, and Jean Shrimpton had basically split. I wish…

Instagram, for many years, has been a game changer like nothing many of us had ever seen in our lifetimes. Let us think about it for a minute: What other social media outlet (that is free to download and use) has spawned multi-millionaires in the form of influencers-turned-celebrities? Many of whom, by the way, have since become clothing designers, professional models or entrepreneurs in a variety of genres across the luxury lifestyle and fashion industries. And although “influencer” can sometimes have a negative connotation (a 2019 BBC article explains in detail how the term “influencer” became a dirty word) there are those amongst us in the watch community, including enthusiasts and collectors, who simply, without even trying … influence. Many whom we might consider to be watch industry “influencers” never…

Space Age 2.0 is an era of exponential technological progress, driven by desire for discovery, domination and the continued survival of humanity in light of the environmental crises taking place on Earth. Just as Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey aestheticized mysteries of the cosmos during the initial space race in the 1960s, the futuristic affordances of Asian space exploration are now informing new visions of emergent commercial worldbuilding. The liminal nature of interstellar existence is encoded into work, hospitality and retail spaces that behave more like spacecraft than physical destinations. Unassuming concrete exteriors conceal remarkable thresholds, transporting visitors from reality to unreality via steel-clad, fluorescent-lit tunnels and celestial glossy white staircases. Secure from external hostilities, intrepid explorers are admitted into open and transparent internal vistas. Infinity mirrors, parametric formations and…

Biden’s Policy Must Center Racial Justice

As soon as they were inaugurated, U.S. President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris started making good on their campaign promises. They reentered the Paris climate accord, renewed U.S. support for the World Health Organization, and ended the Trump administration’s travel bans targeting nationals of select Muslim-majority and African nations. Racial justice was also high on the list of issues that they identified as most pressing and requiring action in their first 100 days. On Jan. 26, Biden rolled out his administration’s first steps to advance racial equity and promote national unity and reconciliation. He issued four executive orders spanning issues that affect multiple racial and ethnic minority groups in the United States, namely Black, Latino, Indigenous, Asian, and Pacific Islander Americans. The first executive order directed the Department of Housing…

THE BIG DAY ARRIVES

Five months after Prince William and Kate Middleton announced their engagement, the most exciting wedding of the century so far was upon us. And, as befitted the nuptials of a young man who had served with all three of his country’s armed forces, every minute of this momentous day had been planned with military precision. At 10.18am – almost 45 nail-biting minutes ahead of his bride – the groom arrived at Westminster Abbey with his best man and brother, Prince Harry. The pair had made the short journey from Clarence House to tremendous cheers, and both Princes looked resplendent in their respective military uniforms. The groom had opted to wear the red uniform jacket of Colonel of the Irish Guards, his first senior honorary appointment in the army. This was completed with…

HERODIUM HEROD’S DESERT PALACE

Dominating the arid landscape on the edges of the Judaean Desert stands a hill that was once the pinnacle of territory controlled by Herod the Great. Identified in the mid 1800s as the site of the palace-fortress built by the king, Herodium housed a luxurious oasis in the lands southeast of Bethlehem. Even before its identification, historians had a clear vision of what this landmark once looked like, thanks to the Judeo-Roman historian Flavius Josephus. In his History of the Jewish War, written in the late first century a.d., Josephus described it as“a hill, raised by the hand of man, to be the shape of a woman’s breast.” Comprising palaces, forts, gardens, and a theater, the complex has provided rich insights into a king whose rule shaped the early life of Jesus.…

NUTRITIONIST TO THE STARS GABRIELA PEACOCK FINDS BALANCE, FAMILY FUN AND ROYAL NEIGHBOURS AT HER COTSWOLDS LOCKDOWN RETREAT

‘As much as I love London, this is very different. Lockdown made us all re-evaluate’ Gabriela Peacock has made her name helping royal brides, top models and A-list stars get into shape. Now, the celebrity nutritionist, who’s credited with preparing her close friend Princess Beatrice, her sister Princess Eugenie and cousin the Duke of Sussex for their weddings, has overhauled her own lifestyle with a move to the Cotswolds – where open space and fresh country air are top of the menu. ‘The kids collect eggs every morning, which is so sweet’ Gabriela’s home for most of this year has been her retreat in Oxfordshire, a 17th-century manor house where she has been running her successful nutrition business remotely, using Zoom calls to see her clients, who include the likes of Beatrice, Dame…

TOASTING THE GOOD LIFE AT THEIR IDYLLIC VINEYARD MIRYAM ABASCAL VALDENEBRO THE WINEMAKER AND ARISTOCRAT ON KEEPING A FAMILY DREAM ALIVE

‘Portugal has been a blessing for us and the children. It’s a magnificent place with lovely people, amazing landscapes and the best possible quality of life’ As she gazes out over the rows of vines on her historic wine estate, Miryam Abascal Valdenebro can see an elegant rosé in the making. But that’s not all. Before her eyes is living proof that – if lovingly nurtured – dreams, like vines, take root and grow. It’s four years since the Andalusian aristocrat and her husband, Nicholas von Bruemmer, came to live in Casal Santa María on the south-western tip of Portugal. Financier Nicholas inherited the estate from his grandfather, Baron Bodo von Bruemmer, an extraordinary man who suddenly, at the age of 96, set about creating a vineyard here, devoting himself to it right…

PLANT BURGERS

IF YOU love eating a grilled burger perfected into juicy, salty, fatty heaven… then you’re probably struggling right now, painfully aware that as a population, we need to reduce how much meat we consume. Plant-based meat analogues aren’t your standard meat substitutes, such as tofu, Quorn and soya mince; nor are they the much-hyped but still experimental meats grown in the lab from stem cells. They are plant products processed to look, smell, taste and feel like meat – and they are aimed squarely at diehard meat-eaters. ↓The next section has more on lab-cultured meat San-Francisco-based firm Impossible Foods, maker of the Impossible burger, is a big player in this new market. “We’re not going to be able to just talk people into a plant-based diet,” says its chief scientist David Lipman. “We…

After a successful career in event planning and styling, Mansi Shah-Kothari was looking for a new challenge and so her lettering company Ko.lligraphy was born. Hong Kong-based Mansi balances creating commissions and running calligraphy workshops with raising her two children. Calligraphy was always something I’ve admired from a distance, but thought I would never be good at. I did try a few pointed pen workshops over the years, but I didn’t dedicate the time to practise. When I left my job in 2019, I had more time for myself, and was searching for something that I could call ‘mine’ – it initially started as a personal hand lettering project of personalising water squirters for my kids’ birthday party, which is when I realised that hey, maybe I can be good at…

Dept. of Archeology: Pompeii’s Hidden Layer

The journey from Naples to the ruins of Pompeii takes about half an hour on the Circumvesuviana, a train that rattles through a ribbon of land between the base of Mt. Vesuvius, on one side, and the Gulf of Naples, on the other. The area is built up, but when I travelled the route earlier this fall I could catch glimpses of the glittering sea behind apartment buildings. Occasionally, the mountainous coast across the bay came into sight, in the direction of the old Roman port of Misenum—where, in 79 A.D., the naval commander and prolific author Pliny the Elder watched Vesuvius erupt. Pliny, who led a rescue effort by sea, was killed by one of the volcano’s surges of gas and rock; his nephew, Pliny the Younger, provided the…

Awkwafina and I are going deep on our love for true crime. “Dateline is, like, king,” she says. We trade favorite episodes and she offers a spot-on armchair analysis of the typical perps. “It’s always the husband and it’s usually some kind of infidelity. And it’s…it’s…stupidity because they never cover their tracks, right? You know what I mean?” Her affection spans the full spectrum of the genre (Forensic Files, The Inventor, even a detour down the true-crime-adjacent Sex Sent Me to the ER rabbit hole), but her sweet spot is scammers, elaborate cover-ups, and scandals like American Greed. The psychological itch it scratches for her, she suspects, is a bit of schadenfreude: “I’m so glad that I’m not this stupid and this greedy.” During a short spell of downtime as COVID-19 sent…

The Inimitable Volodymyr Zelenskyy

The Inimitable Volodymyr Zelenskyy

On 24 February 2022 at 3.40am (GMT+2), the Russian Federation launched a full-scale war against Ukraine. Since then, Ukrainian cities have been bombed daily with heavy artillery and tanks. Missiles fly at civilian buildings, schools, maternity hospitals and even evacuation trains. The current invasion is a new stage in the eight-year Russian-Ukrainian war, since Russia occupied Crimea and parts of the Donetsk and Luhansk regions in 2014. Amongst it all, Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, has become the man who inspires millions. His courage, valour and committment to his people have shone through, in what has been an otherwise unbearably dark period for his country. Executive Director of one of Ukraine’s leading NGOs and a world policy Analyst, Olga Lymar shares why even though Zelenskyy’s sudden rise to the world’s political stage…

Why Did Bollywood Big Wigs Not Support SRK?

Shah Rukh Khan’s son Aryan Khan faced a critical litmus test recently. He was arrested by the NCB on a cruise liner. Aryan’s bail was rejected four times and the boy was put up at Arthur Road jail, a correction centre which houses hard-core criminals. Though many of SRK’s friends came out in the open and supported him, Sumita Chakraborty wonders why so many top players in the industry didn’t come out in the open and support SRK during his time of crisis? When Aryan Khan - after his bail was rejected four times - finally was granted bail… his battery of lawyers hurrahed in joy. As for dad Shahrukh Khan, he just gratefully looked above and his eyes welled with tears – he was not India’s most loved superstar at…

The Ultimate Flavor Makers

“THE WAY FOOD FEELS IN your mouth plays an important role in how flavorful and enjoyable it is,” says Molly Baz, the author of Cook This Book. “So a key part of selecting ingredients for your dish involves thinking about what textures they’ll bring.” Reach for flavorful crunch from things like nuts, seeds, and croutons, she says. And for balance, add silkiness with a dollop of yogurt or a swirl of tahini. Turn the page to learn Baz’s techniques to make your meals more delicious and satisfying—and healthier too. Give It Some Bite “More often than not, dishes are lacking a super-crunchy texture that I call crispy crunchy,” Baz says. This texture is cooked separately from the main dish, which is why it often goes overlooked. Three of her quick and easy…

I looked over the edge of my canoe in alarm at a small stream of bubbles and concluded it could mean only one thing. There was a hippo down there. A hippo heading straight towards us. “But there’s no need to panic!” said my guide with an air of practised nonchalance. “However, now is probably a good time to pick up the pace.” And with that we rounded into a shallow corner of Botswana’s Selinda Spillway just as a big black beast exploded from the depths with tusks scything the air. Chuckling, my guide continued down the river towards the upmarket Selinda Reserve and Zarafa Camp. “They’re cheeky little buggers, hey?” he said, cool as a cucumber. We were together in the same canoe, on a five-day expedition following the Selinda Spillway for 45 kilometres between…

Brothers and sisters, let’s face the facts: We live a damn expensive lifestyle. These steel horses we ride are not cheap, and the more power and reliability you want, the more you have to pay for it. But that doesn’t always have to be the case. If you’re willing to spend the time digging through and dealing with the “used bike” crazies, you can find great motorcycles with surprisingly reasonable price tags. When I was first starting off, a Harley-Davidson motorcycle was all my little heart desired, but it seemed to be unobtainium with my hourly job and the beer fund usually taking an unhealthy chunk of my biweekly checks. It is technically simplified and stylistically normalised in comparison to its groundbreaking cousins, and comes with a much smaller price tag. While affordability is a major lure, the Freak X is far from a cheap imitation. It retains the classic Freak characteristic of having no dial and no hands, instead using the baguette-shaped central bridge of the carousel as a minute hand and one of the wheels to indicate hours instead. The mechanics have been simplified for better legibility, and the case has shrunk from 45mm to 43mm. The main departure from previous Freak models is the inclusion of a crown for time correction instead of the ingenious…

“Nothing exceeds like excess. You should know that, Tony.” Those are Elvira Hancock’s words to Tony Montana in Brian De Palma’s immortal masterpiece Scarface. Essentially an almost three-hour-long rise-and-fall chronicle of its titular antihero. The film, released in 1983, is an incendiary meditation on the source. It’s the blood-pumping heart behind the psychology and phenomenon of fame: ambition. Its lessons (and prophecies) were writ large throughout the ‘90s, the last cultural era when fame it appears, was directly measured by tangible output and product and continues to illuminate its current strains the way a blacklight picks up stains. Fame is a universal proposition—like love, rage and Nike. Everyone, everywhere, wants some iteration of it, whether it’s just a little piece or the whole pie. A big part of what makes Montana such…

Deal of the Week Fox News, meet Harvey Levin. As AT&T looks to offload assets ahead of its spinoff of its WarnerMedia division to Discovery, the telecom giant said Sept. 13 that it sold gossip brand TMZ to Fox Corp. Terms of the agreement were not disclosed, but someone familiar with the sale pegged the value of the deal to THR at less than $50million. The move will see the notorious tabloid operate under the Fox broadcast network umbrella. In addition to its websites, TMZ also has had a syndicated TV series, TMZ on TV, since 2007, and the spinoff series TMZ Sports on FS1. Fox’s owned-and-operated stations were the launch partner for the syndicated show and will keep airing the program, which already was renewed through the 2022-23 season. Day-to-day operations of…

Mondadori relocated from London to Milan with her three children, Leonardo, Tancredi, and Cosima, in order to be closer to her mother, Paola Zanussi, and to connect the children with their Italian heritage. The choice would prove prescient on several levels, as the move occurred just before the world shut down. Mondadori, founder of the tastemaking lifestyle brand and magazine Cabana and a scion of Italy’s influential Mondadori and Zanussi families, and Hicks, a decorator, artist, and the son of legendary designer David Hicks, decided to make the design of the flat a complete collaboration. Handbag designer Tyler Ellis is the daughter of American fashion icon Perry Ellis and television writer and producer Barbara Gallagher, and much like her late father, she has a taste for what might best be described as modern classics—a deftly calibrated mix of simple, timeless lines and contemporary panache. The style applies not only to her own luxury creations—a staple of Hollywood’s endless red-carpet parade—but also to the chic, breezy Brentwood home she shares with her husband, investor Benjamin Shriner. Seduced by the property’s French-inflected, classical-meets-Deco architecture and its abundant Italian cypresses, the two purchased the house five years ago and called upon its original architect, William Hefner, and Ellis’s longtime interior designers, the Los Angeles–based AD100 firm The Archers, to reinvent the place to reflect the young couple’s taste…

While Hyke does categorically women’s fashion, its design aesthetics—marked by clean lines, utilitarian elements, and at times, oversized volumes—lend a genderless appeal that has gained a cult following among the stylish men and women in Japan and abroad. It helps too that the brand has had successful collaborations with the likes of adidas and The North Face. Not only have these further spread Hyke’s awareness in among the streetwear-leaning set, but also cemented its position as one of Japan’s rising stars in fashion. But of course, at that point, it did seem like a far-fetched pipe dream as Ranbir was dating Katrina Kaif – remember the ‘infamous’ picture of a red n white bikini clad Katrina with Ranbir snapped on a private holiday on the beaches of Europe that got pap’d straight to the Stardust cover. But that was then… For destiny and the sands of time had plans of their own, and as they say about the universe and how it conspires to make your dreams come true – and sure enough Alia’s choti si khwaish ended up becoming…

‘The Clothes Needed to Exaggerate the Wiggle’

For Oscar-winning costume designer Catherine Martin, creating the looks for the new biopic Elvis came down to sexuality, the swerve of a hip, and a little bit of shake, rattle and roll. She says of working with director Baz Luhrmann, her husband and longtime collaborator: “Baz wanted to make sure contemporary audiences could connect to the rebel nature of Elvis Presley [played by Austin Butler] and both his innate sexuality and the sexuality of his movement connected with his body underneath his clothes. We needed to be sensitive to both the historical veracity and the meaning for the clothes that Elvis wore.” Those clothes were often, she notes, “highly controversial.” The Warner Bros. film, due out June 24, is a tale of three decades in the King of Rock and Roll’s…

According to the Guinness World Records, Frenchwoman Jeanne Louise Calment remains, to this day, the oldest known person to have ever lived at 122 years old. It was said that Calment, born in 1875 (before the Eiffel Tower was even constructed), lived a relatively quiet life until her death on 4 August 1997. That particular date just so happens to be the birthdate of one Louis Vuitton. He was born on 4 August 1821 with a life that was perhaps a stark contrast to Calment’s. The Frenchman was, after all, the founder of what is now known as one of the world’s most recognisable brands, calling mega-celebrities the likes of South Korean boyband BTS and tennis champion Naomi Osaka among its growing list of ambassadors. IN HIS MAJESTIC ANCESTRAL PALACE IN MADRID THE COUNT OF OSORNO AND BELEN CORSINI UNITE TWO OF SPAIN’S BIGGEST DYNASTIES AS THEY MARRY IN EUROPE’S FIRST MAJOR HIGH-SOCIETY WEDDING IN 18 MONTHS

It could have been a scene from a fairytale, in which the beautiful bride marries a handsome aristocrat in the landscaped gardens of his family’s historic ancestral palace. But this real-life love story took place in Madrid’s 18th-century Liria Palace, where last week around 300 guests gathered to witness Carlos Fitz-James Stuart y Solís, Count of Osorno, marry Belén Corsini de Lacalle. While hundreds of onlookers gathered outside to catch a glimpse of Europe’s first high-society wedding in 18 months, the bride arrived at her future husband’s family home dressed in an empire-line georgette silk gown by Cristina Martínez-Pardo Cobián for Navascués. SOMETHING BORROWED Holding her hair in place was a silver and diamond decoration shaped into two interlocking circles to symbolise eternal love, created from a piece belonging to her mother.

Prince William had no shortage of female admirers when he began his studies at the University of St Andrews in 2001, but there was one striking, quietly confident, green-eyed brunette who had a certain magnetism. “When I first met Kate I knew there was something very special about her,” he has said. It was hard not to notice Kate – by the end of her first week, she had been named the prettiest girl at Sally’s, the nickname for St Salvator’s, the hall of residence in which they were both staying. But as Kate and the young Prince exchanged shy smiles when they passed on the stairs in their early days, neither could have known it was the beginning of a love story that would capture the world’s imagination. The Cambridges’ relationship, which started…

Then imagine it still upholding all the Lotus virtues of best-in-class ride and handling, driver engagement and striking design, having been developed and assembled at Hethel. Like England football fans, it’s best to keep expectations in check when dealing with Lotus, but that’s the potential in its new Emira – a sports car developed under Chinese majority owners Geely Holdings, with design like a downsized McLaren, but an ‘under £60k’ price that floats it in mid-spec Porsche Cayman S waters. Why Esquire must continue to push boundaries

A former sex worker was not impressed with my recent performance and told me so. As I was standing with my wife and daughter at the time, the encounter was a bit awkward. As the three of us were attending our first Pink Dot Rally together, the woman’s accusations were somewhere between incongruous and surreal. She hadn’t liked one of my recent Esquire columns. In fact, she’d hated it. I respected the opinion, if not the timing. My little girl was with me. We only wanted a pink balloon. Instead, I was criticised for using archaic terminology (prostitute, rather than sex worker, which I apologised for) and accused of mocking the sex industry (which really wasn’t my intention). Early womanhood can feel like a natural time to be short on money, but it doesn’t have to be like that. If we connect to the truth — that we’re at the start of a long journey of understanding what we want and how to get it — then taking control of our financial self is like working on our CV or cleaning out our wardrobe: something that pays off immediately, and again. But attacking our CV or a pile of clothing isn’t something we spontaneously want to do, and it’s easy to criticise ourselves for not understanding our money or what we do with it. It’s not your fault, either — studies have shown that Australian families teach their kids how to spend, rather than how to save. Gender matters, too.…

The Sporting Scene: Finding a Way Up

“Come on, Tommy!” Becca Caldwell was urging her husband on. “You got this! Try hard!” Tommy Caldwell was already trying hard. Known for climbing cliffs that rise for thousands of feet above remote places, he was spread-eagled this morning three feet off the ground, clinging to an overhanging boulder in a pine forest near Estes Park, Colorado. The climb he was attempting went from a fiercely difficult start to a desperate right-hand pinch, and he was falling flat on his back each time he tried the move. It was a short fall onto a soft pad beneath him, but still. “Come on, Tommy! This is Tommy’s Arete!” An arete is an outside edge—in this case, the razor edge of a rather tall boulder. Caldwell hit the pad again. He was bare-chested, wearing gray…

Menopause – a last taboo

Menopause – a last taboo

Celebrities have spoken out about their experiences of menopause in recent years. TV presenter Lorraine Kelly described feeling ‘narky’ and suffering hot flushes, while ex-Countdown presenter Carol Vorderman revealed how she battled depression and, at times, didn’t ‘see the point in carrying on’. Menopause is when your ovaries stop producing eggs, periods end and you are no longer able to get pregnant naturally. Symptoms are caused by the drop in sex hormones oestrogen, progesterone and testosterone. Oestrogen helps develop and maintain female characteristics and the reproductive system and contributes to cognitive, cardiovascular and bone health and other processes. Progesterone prepares the womb for pregnancy but may also enhance memory while calming and suppressing anxiety. Many regard testosterone as a ‘male’ hormone but women also need it and too little can affect your…

WILL THE MEGA FLOPS OF HIS FILMS JEOPARDISE AKSHAY KUMAR’S CAREER?

With Bachchan Pandey performing rather poorly at the box office – it didn’t even make 50 crores in seven days–proving to be a mega dud and a big blot on Khiladi Kumar’s record, Akshay Kumar who was known as the man with the Midas touch, suddenly found himself jolted and dropped right down the ladder. “‘Kashmir Files’ box office success Bachchan Pandey ko duba diya,” Akshay claimed ruefully. True… but this film was one of the many Akshay Kumar starrers that spiralled uncontrollably downhill at the Box office. In fact, after Laxmmi and Bell Bottom, Bachchan Pandey too sunk its way into the depths of oblivion. Was that the last nail on the Khiladi’s coffin? CHANGING TIMES True, thanks to the lockdown, things have drastically changed. Bollywood’s unwritten rules and laws have all…

Down Memory Lane

“I’ve never troubled any filmmaker or any person for that matter.”- Govinda It’s surprising really how Govinda hasn’t been grilled for a long time. Chi Chi gets into enough trouble in a day to be able to put him into the dock every month. Brawling and acting obnoxiously seem to feature more in the Hero No. 1’s agenda than his daily shootings. People just can’t seem to be able to make up their minds about him. They’re not sure whether to label him a liar or a jinx. In fact, his detractors are quick to tag him both. The filmmakers (he’s recently worked with) almost have a mutual dislike society going for him. He’s also accused of being a hypocrite and trouble-maker. On one hand, he’s got a rejuvenated film career…

PRINCEGEORGE’S BIRTHDAY Ensure many happy returns with practical shorts and playful dresses Prince George’s eighth-birthday party is sure to be a lively affair, so classic but comfortable attire is called for. Smart stripy shorts worn with loafers and a crisp white shirt are de rigueur for any little prince, while their sisters will enchant in pastel-coloured party frocks and Mary-Janes. Presents should aim to please the parents too – eschew garish electronics and opt for a set of stylish Liberty skittles or a Tiffany teddy bear. LYDIA SLATER THE DUCHESS OF SUSSEX’S BABYSHOWER Welcome the newborn in cosseting pinks Dressing up for arguably the most exclusive event of 2021 – Serena Williams co-hosted the last one – demands serious thought. A TALE OF TWO LIZARDS

A TALE OF TWO LIZARDS

THE FOSSIL was heralded as the smallest dinosaur ever found. Named Oculudentavis and known from a skull encased in 99-million-year-old amber, the living animal would have been about the size of the smallest modern hummingbirds. Strange, then, that such a tiny fossil stirred the largest paleontological controversy of the year. From the time of the fossil’s March publication in Nature, outside experts were skeptical of the animal’s identity. The initial analysis by paleontologist Lida Xing and colleagues couldn’t pin down where Oculudentavis fit in relation to other dinosaurs; if anything, the fossil had characteristics that were both primitive and advanced for a dinosaur of its age. Rumors began to spread that there was a second specimen of the same animal that confirmed the creature’s identity as a lizard. Then, on July 22,…

KELLYN TAYLOR

A DAY IN THE LIFE: Taylor, 34, keeps her day pretty precise to make sure everyone in her busy house can be where they need to be on time. She wakes up around 5:30 or 6:00 a.m. before her 10-year-old daughter and younger foster kids wake up. “That’s usually my main goal, just so I can sneak downstairs and make my coffee and not have anybody lurking about for at least 15 to 25 minutes.” (She thrives on coffee.) After the kids are up, fed, and ready to go, she’s out the door by 7:45 a.m. That gives her just enough time to drop the kids offand get to her NAZ Elite practice by 8:30 a.m. “I’ve got pretty hard-set times just so I can try to not be late,” she…

EENIE, MEENIE, MINEY, MO Coffee grows best in the shade, despite how hardy its gnarled, knotted trunk makes it look. This means that trees don’t need to be cut down for coffee to be grown – a fact that Coorg benefits from. So, huge tracts of forests have been left untouched in coffee plantations across the region. And so have old estates from colonial times. Strangely, that can pose a different kind of problem. A holiday on a privately-owned plantation in Coorg ticks all the right boxes – unless there are three equally compelling options to distract you. Which is when eenie, meenie, miney, mo becomes a bona fide way of coming to a decision. Built in 1878 by Rev Christian George Richter, a German missionary, School Estate in Siddapur probably makes…

When you finally sit down to eat, you realise that even an overactive imagination like yours couldn’t have done justice to the spread that lies before you. WHY MEN CAN WALLOW IN THEIR NOSTALGIA (WITHOUT BEING TOXIC)

WHY MEN CAN WALLOW IN THEIR NOSTALGIA (WITHOUT BEING TOXIC)

My wife returned earlier than expected and caught me in the act, in my boxer shorts, ready to climax. I was about to hit the high note in Oasis’ ‘Wonderwall’. There I stood, in front of my replica jukebox, hands behind my back, virtually naked, psyching myself for the big moment. “Because maybe… You’re gonna be the one that saves me, ” I sang. “And after all… You’re my wonder—oh, you’re home early.” “I see the midlife crisis is kicking in nicely, ” my wife sighed, dropping the keys on the table. “Put some clothes on, Liam Gallagher. Your daughter’s bringing friends over.” I blame Covid-19, Netflix, the Oasis documentary Supersonic and my age, all coming together at the same time; a confluence of events that only further indulged my nostalgia addiction. Supersonic took me…

The Care-Giver

THE SICKNESS arrived in the spring. A rash and a sense of imbalance: her feet, she complained, felt heavy, as though she could not lift them from the ground. The falls began later that summer: minor trips around the house, then a big one while walking the dog. They blamed it on a tree root that had upended the concrete sidewalk, it was something anyone could have done. But when she went to Urgent Care, the doctor examined her hurt shoulder and then asked her to walk around the room, studying her gait. I think you need to see someone, the doctor said. She didn’t right away. Later, she would second-guess herself, wonder if she had caught it earlier, they might have done something. But of course, there was nothing to be…

Another World (VENICE) Cannes best actor laureate Vincent Lindon reteams with The Measure of a Man director Stephane Brize for another exploration of the demise of France’s working class. In this nerve-racking look at a factory boss obliged to make layoffs, Lindon channels the tremendous strain faced by a solicitous man who’s been backed into a corner beneath the crushing weight of global capitalism. — JORDAN MINTZER The Box (VENICE, TORONTO) This quietly devastating drama from Lorenzo Vigas (From Afar) recounts the reckoning of an orphaned teenager (Hatzin Navarrete) with a man he’s convinced is his father (Hernan Mendoza). Set against the bad-lands and manufacturing plants of northwestern Mexico, the slow-burn coming-of-age story draws its sorrow from the dehumanizing supply chain of cheap labor. It’s an acutely observed chamber piece played out by…

Gout is a kind of inflammatory arthritis that causes sudden and severe joint pain. Only prolonged rest and the application of heat provide relief. By one unspecified internet account, cases of gout—a disease that had all but disappeared—have risen by 20 percent over the last three years. Now, consider Rolex. The Swiss watchmaker makes arguably the world’s most desirable timepieces. And yet they are far from exclusive: indeed, Rolex is estimated to make a staggering 800,000 watches every year. Rolex is everywhere. Strangely, both gout and Rolex have their places in the same world, albeit different ones. The former was once dubbed ‘the disease of kings’ because it’s brought on by excessive eating and a sedentary lifestyle, both usually only available to the wealthy. The latter, with its crown logo, isn’t…

Astrology’s “Hidden Planets” What they Say About You

Astrology’s “Hidden Planets” What they Say About You

A whole new generation of people is becoming entranced by astrology. These people love studying the subject, and are often open to learning more than just the standard signs, planets, and houses. Astrological ideas and concepts that tend to be thought of as add-ons for astrologers who have been practicing for many years are now often part of the education of people just learning their astrological craft. The asteroids, for example, have actually been around for a long while, but with ever more powerful telescopes and space probes, pictures and data from the outer regions of the solar system have been sent back. Astrologers coming of age in the last few years have been able to study objects in their charts that were unknown even within the last decade, so…

“Today, doctors understand the brain’s ability to reorganize and rewire itself to compensate for traumatic brain injury. … But at the time of my accident, I’m told that my brain damage is permanent.” AS I PULL OUT OF the parking garage in Los Angeles, I’m looking forward to the drive home to Encinitas. After three weeks in the city on a work project, I know that the 115-mile drive down the California coast—smelling the salty tang of the ocean air and listening to the roar of the surf against the shore—will invigorate me. I head for the freeway, making a left at the first intersection. That’s when a woman runs the red light and rams into my car, pleating its side against my thigh. The impact spins me like a top. I…

It was his task of adding new life to a run-down basketball court that caught our eye. A basketball court in Punggol was given a fresh coat of blue paint—wavy shapes, some of which are patterned by lines. This was part of Toby Tan’s (or as he’s known by his nome d’arte, Tobyato) final-year project at NTU’s School of Art, Design and Media, called Kejiranan, meaning ‘neighbourhood’ in Malay. Tan wanted to discover the origins behind the names of local neighbourhoods and engage with the residents through basketball court paintings. In Malay, ‘Punggol’ means ‘throwing sticks at fruit trees’, which were represented by the straight lines and the colour and shapes were influenced by Punggol being one of the first waterfront towns back then. Tan would follow that up with another…

July 2022 When this month’s column was first written in early February (yes, we work that far ahead) Russian troops were stationed on three sides of Ukraine, with their strength estimated from 100,000 to 150,000 by various news sources. By the time this was rewritten, after waiting so I could get it in just ahead of the deadline, the Russian troops had crossed into Ukraine from three sides, with Vladimir Putin snarling that their assignment was the “deNazification” of a country currently run by a Jewish president. If you happen to be a regular reader you may want to take a look at the February installment of this column to understand the astrological roots of this dangerous mess. At the beginning of that column we said that February “looks quite peaceful,” before…
